Sarah Davachi

Born in Calgary, Canada, in 1987, composer Sarah Davachi creates deeply immersive, layered drones using analog and modular synthesizers as well as acoustic instruments such as strings, winds and pianos. Following in the footsteps of minimalist composers like Eliana Radigue and LaMonte Young, her works explore psychoacoustics through subtle variations on essential harmonic structures.
Davachi has worked at Calgary's National Music Centre since 2007, where she handles education, content development and the archiving of data related to musical instruments and recording equipment. She earned a degree in philosophy from the University of Calgary in 2010 and a master's degree in electronic music and recording media at Mills College in Oakland, California, in 2012.

Her first recording, "The Untuning Of The Sky", was released on cassette by Full Spectrum Records in 2013. "August Harp" followed on another cassette label, Cassauna, in 2014. She released her first LP, "Barons Court", in 2015 on Students of Decay, and the cassette "Qualities Of Bodies Permanent" came out shortly after on Constellation Tatsu.
Two more LPs followed in 2016: "Dominions" (JAZ Records) and "Vergers" (Important Records). "All My Circles Run", made up of five tracks each centred on a single acoustic instrument, was released by Students of Decay in 2017.
"Let Night Come On Bells End The Day", recorded using a mellotron and an electronic organ, was released by Recital in 2018.
"Gave In Rest", a more orchestrated work inspired by cathedrals and early music, was instead put out on Ba Da Bing at the end of that year.

In 2019, Sarah Davachi released the album "Pale Bloom", an acoustic suite made up of pieces for piano, pump organ, Hammond B3, violin and viola da gamba, recorded at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California.
In 2020, she founded Late Music, a label within Warp Records' partner-label division. That June, she published a collection of essays titled "Papers". Her "Cantus, Descant", released in September 2020 through Late Music, was recorded on six pipe organs across North America and Europe.
Davachi also released several EPs in 2020, as well as the live double LP "Figures In Open Air". The album "Antiphonals", recorded mainly using mellotron and the Korg CX-3 electric organ, came out in 2021. In 2022, Davachi released the double album "Two Sisters", featuring chamber music written for music box, choir, organ, strings, winds, brass and electronics. She also released the live double album "In Concert & In Residence".
The following "Selected Works I & II" (2023) is a double anthology album gathering ten little gems of psychoacoustics.
In 2024 came a new work, "The Head As Form'd In The Crier's Choir", a majestic statement of the talented Canadian composer's relentless sonic exploration.

Two years later came "The Will Of Tongues" (2026), a monumental work that stands as the natural destination of a rigorous body of research.
