A Californian outfit transplanted to Brooklyn and active since 2015, Momma are a quartet centered on Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten, who handle vocals, guitars and most of the songwriting, backed by the bass of Aron Kobayashi Ritch (who also takes care of production duties) and the drums of Preston Fulks.
Playing an indie-rock heavily influenced by the typical sound of Nineties all-female bands (Breeders, Lush), after two albums that went largely unnoticed, in 2022 they hit the mark with "Household Name".
But international attention is truly captured with "Welcome To My Blue Sky", released in April 2025. It's a record that, between pouty faces and slacker sprawl, lets the vulnerability of the two women come through, as they open up in songs written like an open diary. Inside "Welcome To My Blue Sky" lies the sound of a melancholy summer that didn't go the way it could have, where a feeling of loss overrides everything else. In fact, most of the songs were reportedly written over the summer during a tour supporting Weezer, while Etta and Allegra's romantic relationships were quietly falling apart.
Musically, everything clicks when the quartet leans hard into volume and distortion: that's the case with the nu-gaze nu-gaze turns of "Last Kiss" as well as the grungy surges of their first true anthems, "I Want You (Fever)" and "Rodeo". It's less convincing when the energy evaporates in favor of a more harmless soft-rock ("New Friend", the acoustic fragility of "Take Me With You", and the title track itself). The closing "My Old Street" marks a well-earned homecoming after long weeks spent emulating the exploits of their own heroes.
