Mitski Miyawaki, known as Mitski, is an indie-rock singer with dual American and Japanese citizenship.
Because of her father's job, she spends her youth frequently moving between different countries before settling in New York for college. She studies music at SUNY Purchase, and during her university years self-produces her first two works: "LUSH" in 2012 and "Retired from Sad, New Career in Business" in 2013. Both were released as school projects. In the first she makes predominant use of solo piano, while in the latter she goes as far as employing a student orchestra of as many as 60 members.
Her first album made with the backing of a record label was "Bury Me at Makeout Creek" in 2015. In this work Mitski presents for the first time some of the traits that would make her famous in the years to follow: great attention to lyrics and to narrative elements in general, memorable choruses, and excellent work in counterbalancing sad themes with more upbeat music, creating a surprisingly bittersweet effect. The following record, "Puberty 2" also met with great public response, thanks to the hit "Your Best American Girl".
In 2018 she releases “Be The Cowboy”, which reaches third place on the American independent albums chart. The record also tends to receive a highly favorable critical reception.
In 2021, she accepts the curious invitation of ZZ Comics to compose a soundtrack for the graphic novel “This Is Where We Fall”, to be bundled with copies of the comic.
In 2022 she releases her sixth album “Laurel Hell”. Four years later comes “Nothing’s About To Happen To Me“, a sort of intimate musical with folk tinges.
