He likes to surprise, does Travis “Lil Ugly Mane” Miller, one of the great experimenters of southern hip-hop. While “Playaz Circle”, the 2011 mixtape, already hinted at his desire to escape clichés and labels, his name later became inextricably linked to the multifaceted, psychedelic and deafening take on Memphis rap found on “Mista Thug Isolation” (2012). Since then, rather than repeat the formula, he has preferred to keep reinventing himself, unexpectedly landing in psychedelic indie-rock in 2021 with “Volanic Bird Enemy And The Voiced Concern” and with the singles that followed, collected in 2023 and leaning more toward the slacker and lo-fi style widespread in alternative rock of the Eighties and Nineties.
