Super Étoile de Dakar is the group founded by Grup in 1979 following the split from Étoile de Dakar. Regarded as one of the most influential bands in the history of modern African music, the group defined the classic form of mbalax, blending Wolof percussive tradition with electric instruments, synthesizers and urban arrangements. Its sound stems from the interplay between N'Dour's vocals, Jimi Mbaye's guitar, Assane Thiam's tama, Kabou Gueye's bass and, from the late Eighties onwards, the decisive contribution of Habib Faye. Far more than a mere backing band, Super Étoile was a true musical laboratory, the driving force behind the cycle of fifteen cassettes released between 1982 and 1989, crucial to the rise of mbalax in Senegal and, later, on the international scene.
