Composer and sound designer Kali Malone was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. She then moved to western Massachusetts to study music, before settling in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2012, after striking up a friendship with Swedish avant-garde composer Ellen Arkbro. She also studied electroacoustic composition at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
Her works integrate distinctive tuning systems into minimalist structures for pipe organ, choir, chamber music ensemble and electroacoustic formats. Malone's compositions are rich in harmonic textures, built through synthetic and acoustic instrumentation in repetitive movements and extended durations, giving rise to particular dynamic and emotional tonalities.
Kali Malone's recently released albums – "The Sacrificial Code" (2019), "Living Torch" (2022) and "Does Spring Hide Its Joy" with Stephen O'Malley and Lucy Railton (2023) – have earned international critical acclaim, with the latter album even reaching 4th place on the Billboard chart.
In 2024 her new work, "All Life Long", was released.
Kali Malone has performed at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Venice Biennale, Radio France, the Rockefeller Chapel, Grace Cathedral, the Southbank Centre, Bozar, Schauspielhaus, Berghain, Unsound Festival, Berlin Atonal, Moogfest and Kanal Pompidou, as well as many other museums, contemporary art spaces, concert halls, churches and festivals across Europe, North America, Japan and Australia.
