Japanese Breakfast

Japanese Breakfast are an experimental pop band created by Michelle Zauner, a musician of Korean descent who grew up in Oregon. After various experiences in local bands, in 2013 Zauner took part in a project to write one song a day for an entire month. The tracks were published daily on a Tumblr blog. That same year she formed a band, "Japanese Breakfast", with which she also released a few EPs. The results of these experiences caught the attention of a record label, Yellow K Records, which helped the band release their first album in 2016, "Psychopomp". On this record, Zauner tried to work through the immense grief caused by her mother's recent death. At first she had even considered not continuing with the project and focusing on other things instead. However, she soon changed her mind and signed with a new label, Dead Oceans, able to give her much wider visibility. Under the guidance of veteran producer Craig Hendrix, Japanese Breakfast enriched their sound, adding elements of indie-rock along with string and horn sections. The 2021 album "Jubilee" brought the band remarkable success, landing them in the American top ten chart for independent and alternative albums.
In September 2021, Japanese Breakfast also composed the soundtrack for the video game Sable, developed by Shedworks.
