Horace Andy

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, he began releasing his first work in the late ’60s. He found success in 1972 with his album Skylarking, which topped the Jamaican charts.  In those years he started a fruitful collaboration with producer Bunny Lee, with whom he released many of his most successful singles. A devout believer in Rastafari, he often uses his music as a vehicle for his spiritual messages and his criticism of modern society. Thanks to the growing success of his work, in the ’70s he became one of the most popular singers in his country. What makes him instantly recognizable above all is his highly distinctive falsetto singing style. In 1977 he moved to the United States with his wife, where he recorded one of his most successful albums, “In the Light”. The record was produced by Everton DaSilva, who was brutally murdered two years later. In the ’80s he began changing producers frequently, seeing a decline in sales visibility. In 1985 he moved with his second wife to England. Within a few years he began a successful collaboration with Massive Attack. On the band’s first three albums, Andy sings on several tracks. The huge success achieved by the Bristol band also helped relaunch Andy’s own profile. The Caribbean singer went on to release further albums in the following decades, including recordings more oriented toward dubstep (Livin’ It Up, 2007). In 2022 he began a collaboration with dub innovator Adrian Sherwood.
