English Teacher are a British indie-rock, post-punk and art-pop band formed in Leeds in 2020. The quartet is made up of singer, guitarist and keyboardist Lily Fontaine, guitarist and keyboardist Lewis Whiting, drummer Douglas Frost and bassist Nicholas Eden. The band appeared on "Later... with Jools Holland" in November 2023. Their song "Nearly Daffodils" was named one of the 10 best songs of 2023 by Time magazine.
Following the successful double single "R&B" / "Wallace", the band's first extended release came with the Ep "Polyawkward", put out on April 22, 2022 via Nice Swan Records, a work listed among the 100 best debut Eps by British magazine NME, which called it "playful and polished, with fury and fun overlapping".
In January 2024, the band announced their debut album "This Could Be Texas", released on April 12 via Island Records. The following September, the record received the Mercury Prize, the prestigious award given each year by a jury of experts to the best album released by British or Irish musicians.
