Doves are a British rock band formed in 1998 in Wilmslow, Cheshire, consisting of brothers Jez (guitar, vocals) and Andy Williams (drums) alongside Jimi Goodwin (bass, vocals).
Before becoming Doves, the three musicians formed a dance collective called Sub Sub in 1991, finding success in 1993 with the single "Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)," which reached number three on the UK singles chart. However, after their studio burned down in 1996, the group decided to abandon dance sounds in favor of alternative rock, being reborn as Doves in 1998.
Doves made their recording debut with the album "Lost Souls" in 2000, which was well received by critics and nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. The follow-up, "The Last Broadcast" (2002), topped the UK albums chart, propelled by the single "There Goes The Fear," which reached number three on the singles chart.
In 2005 they released "Some Cities," which also topped the UK charts, driven by the single "Black And White Town." Four years later, in 2009, came "Kingdom Of Rust," followed in 2010 by the compilation "The Places Between: The Best of Doves."
After going on hiatus starting in 2010, during which the members pursued solo projects, Doves reunited in 2018, announcing a show for the Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall in London in March 2019. In 2020 they released "The Universal Want," their fifth studio album.
In February 2025, Doves released "Constellations For The Lonely," described as a "dark" album that reflects on difficult times, yet carries a message of hope. Guitarist and singer Jez Williams stated: "We live in truly horrible times, so we wanted to reflect that but give a bit of hope."
However, the album's promotional tour has gone ahead without frontman Jimi Goodwin, due to mental health issues and recovery from addiction. With his blessing, the Williams brothers have decided to keep performing, sharing vocal duties between them. Despite Goodwin's absence, the shows have received positive reviews, demonstrating the band's determination and the fans' support.
Despite the challenges they've faced, Doves continue to make meaningful music and maintain a strong bond with their audience, remaining an influential presence on the British rock scene.
