D’Angelo

A songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist, D’Angelo is regarded as one of the most respected and innovative musicians of his generation. After cutting his teeth writing songs for other artists, he established himself as the new voice of soul with his debut album, “Brown Sugar” (1995). A central figure in the Soulquarians collective — alongside Questlove, Erykah Badu, J Dilla and Q-Tip — he helped redefine the language of soul, R&B and hip-hop, fusing tradition with a deeply contemporary vision.

His three solo albums, “Brown Sugar”, “Voodoo” (2000) and “Black Messiah” (2014), are unanimously regarded as milestones of modern soul. All three reached the Top 10 of the Billboard 200, with “Voodoo” hitting number one. His biggest hit single was “Lady”, but the song that remains the defining emblem of his career is “Untitled (How Does It Feel)”, immortalized in a celebrated single-take video that became iconic.

Over the course of his career, D’Angelo received 14 Grammy Award nominations and won four: two for Best R&B Album (“Voodoo” and “Black Messiah”) and two more for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance (“Untitled (How Does It Feel)”) and Best R&B Song (“Really Love”).

His output, as spare as it was magnetic, was the fruit of an obsessive perfectionism. But his career was also marked by setbacks: creative blocks, record-label troubles, and addiction to cocaine and alcohol. In 2005 he was arrested for drug possession, and shortly afterward he was involved in a serious car accident.

D’Angelo died on October 14, 2025, at the age of 51. “The brightest star in our family has put out its light in this life… After a long and courageous battle with cancer, it is with profound sadness that we announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to the world as D’Angelo, has left us”, read the statement released by his family. Among the first to pay tribute, DJ Premier wrote on X: “A terrible loss. We shared unforgettable moments. I'll miss you so much. Rest in peace, D’. Love you, King”.
