Current 93 is a project born in London in 1982, founded by musician and painter David Michael Bunting, aka David Tibet (born March 5 in Perak, Malaysia).
The collective is marked by a pronounced stylistic eclecticism rooted in folk contaminated by a host of other flavours that, in its early phase, starting with the majestic debut "Natural Unveiled" (1982), drew mainly on ideas from metal, post-rock and industrial — works with an approach so powerful that they influenced the entire gothic rock scene of the period.
As time went on, Tibet's and Current 93's output began to shed these trappings in favour of a sound that was just as dark but more organic, one that authoritative critics labelled apocalyptic folk or neo-folk, occasionally marked by sinister vocals and deeper forays into acoustic and progressive-rock territory.
Founding member David Tibet has always been the only constant presence. The subjects he tackles span a wide range of religious and esoteric themes, including eschatology, mysticism, gnosticism, occultism and various historical and iconographic reflections.
As mentioned, the project has always been steered by David Tibet, although across the various albums released there have been numerous lasting ties forged with prestigious figures such as Michael Cashmore, Steven Stapleton of Nurse With Wound, Douglas Pearce of Death In June and Steve Ignorant of Crass, not to mention the significant collaborations with Nick Cave, Bjork and Coil, to name just a few.
Current 93's prolific body of work has drawn considerable attention from numerous musicians thanks to the sheer breadth of its output, which has always defied easy, straightforward classification.
