Don Van Vliet, better known as Captain Beefheart, was one of the most singular artists of the American counterculture of the Sixties. A painter, avant-gardist and singer with an extraordinary vocal range, for almost his entire career he was backed by the Magic Band, a collective of musicians who helped him give shape to his wildest and most disorienting ideas. Among its best-known members were John French "Drumbo" (drums), Zoot Horn Rollo (guitar) and Rockette Morton (bass).
