Black Midi are a British band formed in London in 2017, made up of Geordie Greep (vocals and guitar), Cameron Picton (bass, vocals), and Morgan Simpson (drums). Their music was immediately praised for its originality and pronounced experimentation, marked by a fusion of genres such as math rock, jazz, noise, and post-punk. Their sound is dissonant and at times chaotic, with complex rhythmic structures and a compositional freedom that sets them apart on the contemporary music scene.
The band debuted with “Schlagenheim” (2019), produced by Dan Carey and released on Rough Trade. An album that quickly caught critics' attention for its boldness and creativity, earning a Mercury Prize nomination and establishing Black Midi as one of the most intriguing emerging acts on the underground scene. The album explores a vast range of sounds and irregular rhythms, with cryptic lyrics and impressive instrumental performances that reflect the band's free, experimental approach.
In 2021, Black Midi released their second album, “Cavalcade”, on which they further broadened their influences, bringing in elements of prog-rock and jazz fusion and increasing the complexity of their arrangements. On “Cavalcade”, the band showed a growing artistic maturity and an ability to reinvent themselves while retaining a strong musical identity. The record was well received by critics, cementing Black Midi's status as a cult act among fans of experimental rock.
With their third album, “Hellfire” (2022), Black Midi pushed the boundaries of their style even further, offering a concept work that explores sin, redemption and violence through an almost theatrical narrative. This album reflects a theatricality and a grotesque streak reminiscent of bands like King Crimson or Mr. Bungle, with a lyrical approach that expresses a strong narrative and introspective component. “Hellfire” cemented the band's reputation as a cutting-edge musical project, capable of crafting extreme, fascinating sounds.
In 2024, news of Black Midi's split surprised many fans, marking the end of a band that, in just a few years, had managed to leave an indelible mark on the experimental music scene. Geordie Greep, the band's frontman, went on to launch a solo career, carrying forward his eccentric, iconoclastic style with his debut, “The New Sound”, an album that keeps the innovative, provocative spirit of Black Midi alive while pushing the boundaries of personal experimentation even further.
Black Midi remain one of the most influential and original bands on the contemporary British music scene, proof of how boldness and experimentation can win over a devoted fanbase and earn worldwide recognition even in an era dominated by more conventional sounds.
