Adriano Celentano

Adriano Celentano, born January 6, 1938 in Milan, is one of the most iconic and influential figures in Italian entertainment. A singer-songwriter, actor, director and showman, he has built an eclectic career spanning more than six decades, profoundly shaping Italian pop culture.

Celentano made his debut on the Italian music scene in the 1950s, as rock'n'roll began to spread among European audiences. His first hit came in 1959 with "Il tuo bacio è come un rock", which established him as a pioneer of the genre in Italy. Shortly after, he founded Clan Celentano, both a record label and an artistic community that promoted new talent and gave artists greater creative freedom. Among the artists who would be part of it were his nephew-brother-in-law Gino Santercole, his then-girlfriend Milena Cantù, Ricky Gianco, Miki Del Prete, Luciano Beretta, the Ribelli, Detto Mariano and Don Backy.

In the 1960s, Celentano churned out a string of hits that made him a true icon of Italian popular music. Among his most celebrated songs are "24.000 baci", which placed second at the Sanremo Festival in 1961, "Il ragazzo della Via Gluck", with its environmentalist undertones, "Azzurro" (1968), written by Paolo Conte, which became a beloved popular anthem, and the romantic ballad "Una carezza in un pugno", with music by Gino Santercole.

During these years, Celentano also stood out for his unique, charismatic style and loose-limbed stage moves, which earned him the nickname "molleggiato" (the "springy one"). In 1964 he married actress and singer Claudia Mori. The marriage, which still endures, produced three children: Rosita (1965), Giacomo (1966), and Rosalinda (1968). Together, Adriano Celentano and Claudia Mori scored a huge hit in 1967 with the duet "La coppia più bella del mondo" and also won the Sanremo Festival in 1970 with "Chi non lavora non fa l'amore", each performing their own version.

Between the late 1970s and the following decade, Celentano solidified his image as a multifaceted artist. He released highly successful albums such as the wildly eccentric concept album "Yuppi Du" (paired with the film of the same name), "Svalutation" (1976), "Geppo il folle" (1978) and "Soli" (1979), featuring the famous title track written by Toto Cutugno, followed a year later by another hit, "Il tempo se ne va" (1980), with lyrics tackling social, environmental and romantic themes. During this period, his older track "Prisencolinensinainciusol" (1972), sung in pseudo-English gibberish, became an international phenomenon and is recognized as a commentary on global communication.

In the 1990s, Celentano reinvented himself once again, tackling highly topical issues in his lyrics and television shows. Albums such as "Il re degli ignoranti" (1991) and "Arrivano gli uomini" (1996) highlighted his interest in environmental and political issues. At the same time, he made a triumphant return to television with programs like "Francamente me ne infischio" and "125 milioni di caz..te", which blended music, entertainment and discussion of social issues.

He also launched a fruitful collaboration with Mina, producing two studio albums that proved enormously successful: "Mina Celentano" (1998), featuring tracks such as "Acqua e sale", "Brivido felino", "Che t'aggia dì" and "Io non volevo", and "Le migliori" (2016), which includes standout tracks such as "Amami amami", "È l'amore", and "Ma che ci faccio qui".

In the new millennium, Celentano has continued to be a central figure on the Italian music scene. Albums such as "Io non so parlar d'amore" (1999), produced by Mogol and Gianni Bella, marked a triumphant comeback, selling millions of copies. These were followed by "Esco di rado e parlo ancora meno" (2000) and "Facciamo finta che sia vero" (2011), on which he collaborated with artists such as Franco Battiato, Jovanotti and Giuliano Sangiorgi.

With more than 200 million records sold, Adriano Celentano is one of the most representative figures in Italian music. His unmistakable style, his ability to reinvent himself and his talent for anticipating trends have made him a point of reference for generations of artists. Celebrated not only for his songs but also for his contribution to film and television, and often at the center of debate for his controversial stances, Adriano Celentano remains a key figure in Italian popular culture.
