Scenario

2026 (Shady Ridge)
ambient-drone

Perry Frank’s music continues to evolve year after year, increasingly becoming a vast melting pot of all the influences of contemporary ambient. “Scenario” is a further step in this direction, with an ever more stratified sonic material and a more elaborate timbral research. Here ambient music is not merely a background to observe or listen to; it is also a declaration of emotional state.

The point of convergence is clear: the distortions of Rafael Anton Irisarri (“Road To Nowhere”, “Eternal Twilight”), the evocative synths of Tim Hecker (“Back On My Mind”), the liquid drifts of Loscil (“Wait For Me”, “The End”). These slow, crepuscular masses of sound ultimately tend to collapse into an emotional flow that becomes the melancholic soundtrack of an exhausted contemporaneity. The “road to nowhere” evoked by the opening track’s title becomes a metaphor for a landscape we inhabit without ever truly managing to bring its contours into focus. It is not a poetic phrase; it is a statement of fact.

The sonic mosaic at times twists into oppressive, Basinski-like memory loops (“Devotion”); at other times it allows Hecker-esque synths of aching beauty to emerge (“Back On My Mind”), capable of tearing through the drone atmospheres with sudden luminous openings. But it is above all in the long “End” (nine minutes) that the album finds its center of gravity: a slow, sacred drift that offers no promise of redemption. A perfect blend of Loscil, Hecker, and Irisarri that uses the ambient-drone poetics to narrate with expressive urgency an ending that is not a new beginning — it is a real ending.
